Artist:Mel & Tim
Song:Starting All Over Again
Album:Classic Stax
Mel & Tim had two big hits. First was Backfield In Motion in 1969 and then Starting All Over Again in 1972. The problem is they were on different labels so they aren't available on one CD. Mel Hardin and Tim McPherson were cousins originally from Holly Springs, MS but they grew up in Chicago. Hardin's mother Yolanda Hardin was a former singer who started her own label Bamboo Records to record family members. R&B legend Gene Chandler (Duke Of Earl) saw Mel & Tim and he agreed to produce them. The result was Backfield In Motion which reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B Singles chart in 1969. The album Good Guys Only Win In The Movies was released. It was the only album released on Bamboo as it closed. Mel & Tim returned in 1972 with Starting All Over Again. It reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B Singles chart. The song was produced by Barry Beckett and Roger Hawkins in Muscle Shoals and sold to Stax. Starting All Over Again was written by Muscle Shoals staff songwriter Phillip Mitchell. The album Starting All Over Again was released and then a third album Mel & Tim was produced at Muscle Shoals and released in 1973. That was the end of Mel & Tim. You can get Starting All Over Again on this 3CD Stax comp. McPherson died in 1986. Here's Mel & Tim performing Starting All Over Again on Soul Train 1973.
