Andrew "Mr. Scruff" Carthy is a British DJ known for sampling jazz and blues. He has had success mostly in British clubs. The 1999 single Get a Move On! has a catchy refrain so it was used in commercials. It's his best known song to date. Carthy is also a cartoonist who draws all his album covers. And you'll notice the video is drawn like his cartoons. He was born Feb. 10, 1972 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England but he grew up in Manchester. The nickname Mr. Scruff is because of his beard. He started DJing in 1992, first in Manchester and as he became better known, he started touring. After releasing a 1997 album, Carthy signed with Ninja Tune for the 1997 album Keep It Unreal. Ninja Tune was founded by the electronic music duo Coldcut and that's the kind of music they specialize in. So Carthy fits right in. Get a Move On! is Carthy's most popular song because it was used in commercials for Lincoln, Volvo, France Telecom and GEICO. That's how folks find music these days. They hear it in a commercial and Google it. The main sample which is repeated many times is from Bird's Lament by the blues artist Moondog. He also samples T-Bone Walker's Hypin' Woman Blues and That's the Blues by Rubberlegs Williams. I guess Carthy is a blues fan. At least he samples good music. Simon "Sneaky" Houghton of the electronic music duo Fingathing played bass. Carthy directed the video with Warren Edmond. The album Keep It Unreal is available in a tenth anniversary edition with a bonus disc of unreleased tracks from Keep It Unreal. Carthy continues to perform live. But he last released an album in 2014. He does a lot of remixes. He has a thing for tea so he owns the online tea company Make Us a Brew. Here's the video for Get a Move On! by Mr. Scruff.
