The role of Irene Molloy in the 1969 film of the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! was the high point in the career of actress Marianne McAndrew. She was nominated for a Golden Globe. It was her film debut. The rest of her career was not notable. She was born Nov. 11, 1942 in Cleveland. After graduating from Northwestern University, Marianne moved to New York and appeared in a tour of the musical Half a Sixpence. Then her agent called her about auditioning for the role of Irene Molloy in the film of the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!. Of course the film was a misfire mostly due to the miscasting of Barbra Streisand in the lead role. Marianne told her agent that she doesn't sing or dance so it would be pointless to audition. He told her the casting director liked her look and they could work around what she couldn't do. Ultimately she got the role but they had to dub her singing. That was by Melissa Stafford of Dean Martin's Golddiggers. And she couldn't dance. The director was Gene Kelly. I dunno. Maybe he felt sorry for her. Remember Marianne beat out Ann-Margaret for this role. I just think Marianne had the period look they wanted. As she was told, they figured they could work around her shortcomings. The soundtrack is available on CD. After Hello, Dolly!, Marianne mostly did TV guest shots. At least she met her husband on the set of the 1974 horror film The Bat People. She retired after appearing in the 2000 TV movie Growing Up Brady. There was a bit of a Hello, Dolly! revival when clips from the film appeared in the 2008 Pixar film WALL-E. But as I said, Hello, Dolly! was the high point of Marianne McAndrew's mundane acting career. Here's Marianne McAndrew performing Ribbons Down My Back (vocal by Melissa Stafford) from the 1969 film Hello, Dolly!.
