Artist:Gene Hoskins
Song:Make It with Jesus
Album:Homecoming
Gene Hoskins was mainly a background singer before taking the plunge and releasing a solo album. The single Make It with Jesus from the 2021 album Homecoming did very well on the gospel charts. Hoskins is from Charlotte, NC. He's a PK meaning both his parents are preachers so he grew up singing in church with his dad. It looks like his main mentor is Charlotte gospel music legend John P. Kee. He was a background singer for twelve years with Kee, Jonathan Nelson, Todd Dulaney, Maranda Curtis and Micah Stampley. Hoskins decided to go out on his own and release the 2021 album Homecoming on Shanachie Records. Shanachie is not a typical record label. They handle distribution but they don't do promotion. So Hoskins had to go out and promote it himself. Of course Hoskins is hoping to move up to a major label like RCA Inspiration that handles everything. But many gospel artists are in the same boat. He could return to background singing but I guess he got tired of that. Fortunately, the single Make It with Jesus did well on the gospel chart. Hoskins wrote and produced Homecoming with Phillip Bryant who produced Crystal Aikin. Maranda Curtis makes a guest appearance. Gospel music fans should check it out. When he's not singing, Hoskins has a psychotherapy practice in Durham, NC. Here's the video for Make It with Jesus by Gene Hoskins.
