Arletty was a popular actress and singer in France in the 30s. She got into trouble during World War II and that killed her career. She sang Coeur de Parisienne in the 1932 film Un Chien qui Rapporte and that made her a star. She was born Leonie Marie Julie Bathiat May 15, 1898 in the Paris suburb of Courbevoie, France. After her father's death, she left home to pursue a modelling career. She took the name Arlette after a heroine in a story by Guy de Maupassant. Art dealer Paul Guillaume suggested that she might want to try acting. She appeared in music halls in the 20s. After performing in Maurice Yvain's 1928 opera Yes, she made her film debut in 1930. Her next film was the 1932 film Un Chien qui Rapporte written and directed by Jean Choux. She starred with Rene Lefevre and she sang Coeur de Parisienne in the film. She appeared in several films over the next few years including the 1939 film Fric Frac with Michel Simon and the 1945 film Les Enfants du Paradis directed by Marcel Carne. She appeared in several of his films. It all came to a screeching halt in 1945 when Arletty was imprisoned for her wartime liaison with German Luftwaffe officer Hans-Jurgen Soehring. during the occupation of France. She was guilty of treason mostly because she was famous. After 18 months in prison, Arletty returned to acting though she eventually retired due to failing eyesight.
