Artist:The Wombats
Song:Give Me a Try
Album:Glitterbox: Deluxe Edition
The indie band The Wombats have had modest success in their native England. I don't believe they are distinctive enough to have mainstream pop success. They sound too much like other similar bands. The three members of The Wombats attended the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts in 2003. Matthew Murphy is lead singer, plays guitar and keyboards and writes all the songs. Tord Overland Knudsen plays bass and Dan Haggis plays drums. Knudsen was born in Norway. They self released several EPs over the next couple of years. One of them, The Daring Adventures of Sgt. Wimbo and his Pet Otter, was children's music. And they were asked by KIDS Records to turn it into the 2006 album Girls, Boys and Marsupials. The album was released only in Japan. Well, that's an inauspicious debut. They had some success with the 2007 album A Guide to Love, Life & Desperation. The single Let's Dance to Joy Division reached #15 on the British Singles chart. This got them a US release on Bright Antenna for the 2008 EP The Wombats. And their next couple of albums were on that label. They were doing OK but they wanted to go to the next level. For the 2015 album Glitterbox, The Wombats signed with Warner Bros. The album was produced by Mark Crew who has produced similar bands like Bastille and Lovejoy. The album did OK in England but there was no breakthrough in the US. Glitterbox is available in a deluxe edition with two bonus tracks as a budget CD. Since then The Wombats released albums distributed by Kobalt and AWAL. They are distributers with no promotion budget. Meanwhile Murphy has released a couple of solo albums as Love Fame Tragedy. It looks like he has started a new band and The Wombats haven't posted on Facebook since 2022. Here's the video for Give Me a Try by The Wombats.
