Artist:Trey Songz
Song:Heart Attack
Album:Chapter V
Though he has had a couple of top ten pop hits, Trey Songz has been very successful on the R&B charts for the last twenty years. He's fading now but a comeback is always possible. He's had a pretty good run. He was born Tremaine Neverson Nov. 28, 1984 in Petersburg, VA. His stepfather was in the military. Songz was shy as a child. But he had singing talent. So his stepfather introduced him to his high school buddy Troy Taylor. Taylor recorded for Motown in 1990. Then he got into songwriting and production mostly with the production collective The Characters. They wrote and produced the 1999 Tyrese hit Sweet Lady. After The Characters split up in 2002, Taylor started his own company Songbook Entertainment with Atlantic distribution. Songz was Songbook's first signee. After Songz graduated from high school, he moved to New Jersey to work closely with Taylor. Taylor produced other artists. But he was building Songz from scratch. So he was his main project. Though Songz' first couple of albums did OK, he broke through with the 2009 album Ready. The single Say Aah was a top ten pop hit and he routinely topped the R&B charts. The album was certified Platinum. That was followed up by the 2010 top ten pop hit Bottoms Up from the album Passion, Pain & Pleasure. Songz and Taylor wrote and produced most of the songs together though Taylor brought in outside producers as well. This continued with the 2012 album Chapter V. The single Heart Attack reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B Singles chart. Though Taylor produced most of the album, Heart Attack was produced by veteran producers Benny Blanco and Rico Love and Blanco directed the video. Chapter V is available as a budget CD. Taylor must have been busy with other projects because he didn't work on Songz' next two albums. Record sales slumped. Taylor returned for the 2020 Back Home but that didn't help. Songz has had legal problems in recent years mostly with assault charges. So maybe he's keeping a low profile right now. But he has been on tour and it's time for a new album. Here's the video for Heart Attack by Trey Songz. Kelly Rowland appears in the video but she does not sing.
