The 1994 single Funkdafied was a top ten hit. It was the biggest hit for rapper Shawntae "Da Brat" Harris. The album was certified Platinum. That was her debut album and single and the peak of her career. It was all downhill from there. She was born Apr. 14, 1974 in Chicago. Her parents never married so she lived sometimes with her mother and sometimes with her grandmother who sent Shawntae to church. Actress LisaRaye McCoy of the sitcom All of Us is her half sister. After graduating from high school, Shawntae got her big break in 1992 when she won a local rap contest sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps. Part of her prize was to meet the rap duo Kris Kross and that led to meeting their producer Jermaine Dupri. She signed with his SoSoDef label and she's been working with Dupri ever since. He produced the 1994 album Funkdafied and Dupri wrote the songs with Shawntae. The debut single Funkdafied reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album Funkdafied was the first solo album by a female rapper to be certified Platinum. The main sample used is from the 1983 Isley Brothers hit Between the Sheets. This album is available as a budget CD. Shawntae's 1996 album Anuthatantrum didn't do as well as the first album. The biggest hit single was Ghetto Love featuring T-Boz of TLC and it reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. She also appeared in the 1996 Shaquille O'Neal film Kazaam!. Shawntae didn't record again until 2000 and I think that cooled her off. She did make some guest appearances with Missy Elliott and Mariah Carey. Her 2000 album Unrestricted had no hit singles. Also, Shawntae went from her tomboy look to a sexier look that was popular in rap at the time. After her 2003 album Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz, she wouldn't record again until the 2018 album The Return. She still works with Dupri on SoSoDef. So I assume she can record again if she wants to. Like many former rap stars, Shawntae has done plenty of reality TV. She is currently in the cast of the syndicated show Dish Nation. She has also been in prison a couple of times for assault. So I guess she has a bad temper too. She is currently in a relationship with Kaleidoscope Hair Products CEO Jesseca Dupart and they had a son last year. Shawntae could return to music if she wants but I don't know if she wants to. Here's the video for Funkdafied by Da Brat.
