AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Proyecto Uno

Artist:Proyecto Uno

Song:Tiburon

Album:In Da House

Proyecto Uno started out as a merengue band and then added hip hop elements for the 1993 album In Da House. Tiburon is probably their best known song because it uses a very well known sample in the intro. Plus it was a fresh sound. Other bands picked up on this so it was very influential. Proyecto Uno was formed in 1989 in New York City by Nelson Zapata. He was born in the Dominican Republic but he moved to New York City with his family and started listening to hip hop while he was in high school. After releasing a couple of albums as a merengue band,  Zapata asked rapper John "Magic Juan" Wilson if he was interested in mixing rap and merengue. Wilson was born in New York of Dominican descent. He was planning to study marketing at the New York Institute of Technology when Zapata approached him about joining Proyecto Uno. Wilson can rap in English and Spanish. Tiburon first appeared on the 1993 album In Da House. It was remixed in 1997 and the album was re-released by EMI Latin. That remix is more popular than the original. The intro which is repeated several times is sampled from the 1978 Cheryl Lynn hit Got to Be Real. That's a frequently sampled riff that immediately hooks listeners. The album is available on CD. There have been other bands to mix merengue with hip hop so Proyecto Uno was very influential. Wilson left to go solo in 2000. Zapata still leads a version of Proyecto Uno. They last recorded in 2018. Here's the video for Tiburon by Proyecto Uno.
