AccuRadio Song Of The Day-SFJAZZ Collective

Artist:SFJAZZ Collective
Song:Visions
Album:Wonder: The Songs of Stevie Wonder

The SFJAZZ Collective was formed in 2004 as a fundraiser for the annual San Francisco Jazz Festival. I guess it's similar to what the Monterey Jazz Festival has done. The big difference is the SFJAZZ Collective changes each year and the band tours internationally to promote the festival. Some of the top jazz musicians have been through this band. For their inaugural season in 2004, Joshua Redman was musical director and Gil Goldstein was the arranger. Nicholas Peyton, Bobby Hutcherson, Renee Rosnes and Brian Blade were among the musicians. The first couple of SFJAZZ Collective albums were on Nonesuch. Since 2005, the festival has their own label. Each year they release a CD tribute to a legendary composer including John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and last year Antonio Carlos Jobim. Visions is from the 2012 tribute to Stevie Wonder. There's actually two versions of this album. This CD is a studio recording. There is a 3CD version recorded live in New York. The arrangement of Visions is by vibraphonist Stefon Harris. Other musicians are Miguel Zenon on alto sax, Mark Turner on tenor sax, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Edward Simon on piano, Matt Penman on bass and Eric Harland on drums. The band changes each year. Edward Simon is the only member of the 2012 band that is still in SFJAZZ Collective. Current members include Etienne Charles on trumpet, David Sanchez on tenor sax and Warren Wolf on drums. So even if you have seen or heard SFJAZZ Collective before, they are a different band every year. Here's the video for Visions by SFJAZZ Collective.
