AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan

Artist:Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan
Song:Body and Soul
Album:Blues In Time

Here's a 1957 album by two all time jazz greats. Of course at the time tenor sax legend Paul Desmond was in the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Baritone sax legend Gerry Mulligan saw Desmond in 1954 and wanted to record with him. They finally did record in 1957. Apparently the main problem was trying to figure out who would record them. Desmond had recorded mostly with Brubeck on Fantasy Records. He had only recorded two albums as a leader. Mulligan recorded for Pacific Jazz and he had just moved to EmArcy. Mulligan recorded an album with Teddy Wilson in 1956 for Verve Records. He asked Verve owner Norman Granz to arrange a recording session with Desmond. Granz was already helping Mulligan record with Stan Getz. Blues In Time was released in 1957. Other musicians were Joe Benjamin on bass and Dave Bailey on drums who were both in Mulligan's band. You can get this album as part of a budget twofer released in 2012 by the British reissue label Not Now. The other CD is the 1959 Paul Desmond album First Place Again originally released by Warner Bros. Musicians are Jim Hall on guitar and bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay from the Modern Jazz Quartet. Desmond and Mulligan recorded the 1962 album Two of a Mind for RCA. and in the late 60s Mulligan recorded and toured with the Brubeck quartet. Here's a video for Body and Soul by Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan.
