I never thought the joshi business could get worse but some recent business ideas and angles are delusional to the point of lunacy. Some angles have been so convoluted that no one can make sense out of them. Of course the worst offender is GAMI over at Pro Wrestling WAVE. She just seems so desperate and the company doesn't draw no matter what she tries to do. Except they seem to draw OK in Osaka. That's not surprising because there are plenty of regional wrestling companies in Japan that are very profitable running shows in a limited area. So the smart thing to do would be to move WAVE to Osaka and forget about Tokyo. Instead she has decided to open a new company in Osaka called Osaka Women's Pro Wrestling. The company is scheduled to debut Mar. 21, 2010. The concept is very similar to Sendai Girls. Former FMW wrestler Bad Nurse Nakamura will run the company and will be head trainer. So how many wrestlers has Sendai Girls developed in three years? Maybe a half dozen. And what if they leave like Okuda left Sendai and what if they get injured and have to quit or just don't like it. This isn't the early 90s. Young girls aren't lining up to be wrestlers. So there's a very low margin of failure. Of course WAVE has no track record of finding rookies. Their one rookie was 30 years old and she got hurt. To think that something like this has any hope of success is delusional. How much money can anyone throw down a black hole?
And that brings me to the title reign of one Misaki Ohata. I got a good laugh out of her winning the JWP Junior/POP Titles on last month's Ibuki show because it was the personification of delusional desperation. I thought Mariko Yoshida had more sense. They had to get the belts off of Hiroyo Matsumoto because she's not a junior anymore. Of course the obvious destination for them is JWP's Pinkie Mayuca. But Yoshida convinced JWP owner Commando Bolshoi to let Ohata hold the titles for a while. Yoshida's motivation was she thought making Ohata a champ would give Ohata confidence and self esteem that she doesn't have. Yoshida said on her blog that she cried when Ohata won the belts. Of course it hasn't changed the way Ohata is booked. She hasn't won since and is scheduled to lose the belts to Pinkie Mayuca on a July JWP show. She will defend the titles on next week's Ibuki show against Io Shirai. That Ohata is destined to be a transitional champ isn't surprising. Look at the way she was booked at the Jaja Uma tournament a couple of months ago. She obviously hasn't earned enough respect to get meaningful wins outside Ibuki. Yoshida made a sentimental decision that isn't going to help Ohata get respect anywhere else. Even with a title belt, she's still a jobber. Remember that's why Haruka Matsuo quit the joshi business.
