Heather Headley is a Tony Award winning actress who made the jump to R & B with the 2002 album This Is Who I Am. She was born Oct. 5, 1974 in Trinidad. She grew up listening to calypso and soca. At age 15, Heather moved with her family to Fort Wayne, IN when her father accepted a pastor position at a church. Heather studied communications and musical theater at Northwestern University but dropped out and moved to New York. In 1997 she played Nala in the Broadway musical The Lion King. She then played the title role in the Broadway musical version of Aida written by Elton John & Tim Rice. She earned a Best Actress Tony Award in 2000. Heather was signed to RCA by veteran producer Steve Ferrera and This Is Who I Am was released in 2002. She worked with several producers including Shep Crawford and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. He Is was the first single and was written and produced by sax player V. Stephen Smith and Joshua Nile. Both the single and album did very well on the R & B charts and the album reached #38 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her follow up In My Mind was delayed due to the Sony/BMG merger but was finally released in Jan. 2006. It did even better and reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. I expect we'll see new music from Heather Headley in the next year. She's a beautiful girl and has great vocal ability and stage prescence. Check out the video for He Is by Heather Headley.
