July 24 Smackgirl show postponed

Speculation has run rampant in the Japanese MMA community that the July 24 Smackgirl show would be cancelled. The rumours were reported by Ad Combat yesterday. Now Smackgirl president Motoki Shino has posted on his blog that the July 24 show has been postponed and rescheduled for Sept. 21. The problem appears to be one of sponsorship. When the new owners took over late last year, they took a little gamble. That's not surprising from a poker addict like Shino. He was at the World Series Of Poker last weekend. Smackgirl announced that the Feb. 14 show would be broadcast on the BS Fuji digital station at a cost of $100, 000 US. When the Apr. 25 show wasn't on TV, it was clear that something was wrong. That show has been released on DVD. And their new website is under construction. It appears that Smackgirl has lost a substantial sponsorship and there's not much point in putting on a show if it's not on TV. The postponement is clearly an attempt to buy time for Smackgirl to find money somewhere. Shino is hopeful of finding an investor but that's to be expected. I don't expect Smackgirl to close as the brand recognition is worth something in Japan so a new owner is a possibility.
