There was a time not that long ago when a singer like Yuna Zarai would have been content with success in her home country of Malaysia. But with the success of her 2016 hit single Crush, she could be the next big star. She was born Nov. 15, 1986 in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. Her father is a judge. Yuna got into the music scene while studying law at Universiti Teknologi MARA. She has a law degree which will come in handy dealing with music industry sharks. After appearing on the talent contest TV show One In A Million, Yuna released a 2008 EP and exposure through MySpace made Deeper Conversation a local hit. She signed a US deal with Fader Label and released a 2010 EP and the 2012 album Yuna. The single Live Your Life was produced by Pharrell Williams. Yuna appeared on all the late night talk shows. But it wasn't enough for a breakthrough. So Yuna signed with Verve. She released her major label debut CD Nocturne in 2015. But the breakthrough came with the 2016 album Chapters and the single Crush featuring Usher. Crush reached #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and it also made the R&B chart. Much of Nocturnal was produced by Danish producer Robin Hannibal. He also worked with her on Chapters. But she seemed to click with Brian Warfield and Mac Robinson AKA Fisticuffs. They have produced Jhene Aiko and Miguel. And Jhene makes a guest appearance on Chapters. Obviously Usher's star power helped too. She recently released the single Better Now so a new album is on the way. And she is touring Europe in March. Yuna has the talent and looks to be a big star. We'll see if that comes true.
