Song:He's Gonna Step On You Again
Album:Kongos
Today John Kongos is known as the father of the four brothers in the popular group Kongos. But back in the 70s he recorded the classics He's Gonna Step On You Again and Tokoloshe Man. Both were top five hits in England and popular on FM rock radio. He was born Aug. 6, 1945 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He recorded as a solo artist and as Johnny and the G-Men in the early 60s. Kongos moved to England in 1966 and led the bands Floribunda Rose and Scrugg. Neither band was successful. So he released the 1969 album Confusions About a Goldfish on the Pye Records label Dawn. He switched Fly Records for the 1971 album Kongos. The album was produced by Elton John's producer Gus Dudgeon. When He's Gonna Step On You Again and Tokoloshe Man became top five hits in England, the album was picked up by labels worldwide including Elektra in the US. This album is available as an mp3. The Guinness Book of World Records claims that He's Gonna Step On You Again was the first record to sample another recording, in this case African drums. The Happy Mondays 1990 cover of He's Gonna Step On You Again was also a top five hit in England. After that Kongos opened his recording studio in London and I don't think he ever recorded another album. Probably his best known music is for the TV series Fraggle Rock. Kongos still owns a recording studio in Phoenix and of course his four sons are internationally famous as Kongos. Here's John Kongos performing He's Gonna Step On You Again on the French TV show Pop Match 1971.
