AccuRadio Song Of the Day-Bob James David Sanborn

Artist:Bob James David Sanborn
Song:Maputo
Album:Double Vision

Pianist Bob James and sax player David Sanborn were very successful individually when they decided to join forces for the 1986 album Double Vision. James is probably best known for his theme for the TV show Taxi. But he has played on hundreds of records and produced and arranged many of those. He also leads the band Fourplay. Sanborn has also played on hundreds of records. I first heard of him when he recorded and toured with The Brecker Brothers. Sanborn was very successful since recording his 1975 debut album Taking Off for Warner Bros. Meanwhile James recorded for his own Tappan Zee label with Columbia distribution. Sanborn appeared on James' 1977 album Heads. In 1984 James closed Tappan Zee and left Columbia for Warner Bros. So it was an easy decision for Warners to have James and Sanborn record together. Double Vision was released in 1986. It was very successful in the Smooth Jazz market. And it won a Grammy for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. Musicians were Marcus Miller on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Paul Jackson Jr. on guitar and Paulinho Da Costa on percussion. Miller wrote Maputo. Singer Al Jarreau and guitarist Eric Gale make guest appearances. Double Vision is available as a budget CD. James and Sanborn reunited for the 2013 CD Quartette Humaine on Okeh Records. Here's Bob James and David Sanborn with Fourplay performing Maputo at the Tokyo Jazz Festival. It doesn't give a date but it looks recent. So I think the musicians are Nathan East, Chuck Loeb and Harvey Mason.
