Album:All The Good Sh**: 14 Solid Gold Hits 2000-2008
It could be said that Sum 41 rode the coattails of the more successful group Blink-182. They were on the same record label, toured with them and even worked with the same producer. But Sum 41 were very successful in their native Canada and that has kept them going. Fat Lip was their biggest hit in 2001. Sum 41 are from Ajax, ON which is east of Toronto. They were formed in 1996 by lead singer Deryck Whibley and drummer Steve Jocz as Kaspir. After auditions they added lead guitarist Steve Baksh and bassist Jason McCaslin. Their first show was on the 41st day of summer vacation so they changed the band name to Sum 41. After sending out demos, they signed with Aquarius Records and released the 2000 EP Half Hour Of Power. It did well enough to get them a US deal with Island Records. It was always Island's plan to package Sum 41 with Blink-182. They even used Blink-182's producer Jerry Finn on the 2001 album All Killer No Filler. And most reviews noted the similarities. The video for Fat Lip went into heavy rotation on MTV and MuchMusic. It topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. They also toured with Blink-182. The album was certified Platinum. The strategy worked. Sum 41 went to the Republic of Congo in 2004 to document the civil war there. Fighting broke out while they were there and they had to be airlifted out. A documentary about the trip aired on MTV. Baksh left in 2006. The band did not replace him. They hired guitarists for tours. Baksh returned in 2015. Sum 41 left Island and Aquarius after the 2011 album Screaming Bloody Murder. This comp is available as an mp3. They released their latest album 13 Voices on Hopeless Records in 2016. Jocz left in 2013. Sum 41 still tours. They have done well for a band that was supposed to be a Blink-182 knockoff. Here's the video for Fat Lip by Sum 41.
