Joyce Kennedy is best known as the lead singer of the 70s group Mother's Finest. But she also recorded solo before and after she was in that band. She scored a top five R&B hit in 1984 with The Last Time I Made Love, a duet with Jeffrey Osborne. She was born in 1948 in Anguilla, MS but she grew up in Chicago. Joyce recorded a few singles in the 60s with producer Andre Williams. then she met Glenn Murdock of The Vondells. They married and formed Mother's Finest. If you're not familiar with them, Mother's Finest were not R&B or funk. They were a rock band. They recorded several albums for Epic. They were a successful album and touring band. When Mother's Finest ended in 1981, Joyce signed with A&M Records. Her debut album Lookin' For Trouble was released in 1984. Half of the album was produced by Leon Sylvers III and the other half was produced by Jeffrey Osborne. And he made a guest appearance on The Last Time I Made Love. It reached #2 on the R&B Singles chart and #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written by songwriting legends Jeff Barry, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill. This song did not appear on a Jeffrey Osborne album but it does appear on a couple of his comp CDs. And you can get it on this various artists duets CD. Osborne also produced a couple of songs on Joyce's 1985 album Wanna Play Your Game. Other producers were Joyce's husband Glenn Murdock and John "Jellybean" Benitez. When that album was unsuccessful, Joyce turned to studio work and songwriting. Mother's finest reformed in 1989 and released an album. And Joyce did a farewell tour with Mother's Finest in 2017. Here's the video for The Last Time I Made Love by Joyce Kennedy featuring Jeffrey Osborne.
