Song:I'm Gonna Make You Love Me
Album:Number 1's
The Supremes and The Tempations had a long history going back to when they were known as The Primes and The Primettes. And of course they were two of the biggest groups at Motown. So why did it take until 1968 for them to record together. Well, Motown owner Berry Gordy was indecisive to a fault. I'm sure he thought of recording them. But he finally did put them together for the TCB TV special. By this time, The Supremes weren't really The Supremes anymore. They were Diana Ross and The Supremes. And on the 1968 album Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations, The Supremes don't appear. It's Diana singing with The Temptations. I haven't seen the TCB TV special in a long time but I think it's the same thing. You can watch it on Youtube. The big hit single from this album was I'm Gonna Make You Love Me which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. But the song wasn't performed on TCB and from what I could tell, they never performed the song together though The Temptations performed it on The Ed Sullivan Show. I'm Gonna Make You Love me was written by Kenny Gamble and Jerry Ross and it was first recorded by Dee Dee Warwick in 1966. Ross produced that and Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson were on backup vocals. Jerry Butler was among those who also recorded the song. But it wasn't a hit until Ashford and Simpson brought it to Motown producer Frank Wilson. Eddie Kendricks and Diana Ross sang lead and Otis Williams does the spoken word introduction. It says here that Diana performed the song with Stevie Wonder on a 1970 episode of Hollywood Palace. That doesn't appear to be on Youtube. The Supremes and The Temptations recorded the album Together in 1969 but it didn't do as well. Of course there are plenty of comps available but #1's is a budget CD. Here are The Temptations performing I'm Gonna Make You Love Me on The Ed Sullivan Show 1968.
