Song:Rush
Album:Planet BAD: Greatest Hits
Big Audio Dynamite (BAD) was formed after Mick Jones left The Clash. Their music was more dance oriented than The Clash. Rush was their biggest hit in 1991. After Jones was fired from The Clash, he joined General Public which was a result of The English Beat split. He left and formed Top Risk Action Company with ex-Clash drummer Nicky "Topper" Headon. Headon's heroin addiction led to a quick end to that band. Jones and TRAC bassist Leo "E-Zee Kill" Williams formed Big Audio Dynamite with drummer Greg Roberts, keyboardist Dan Donovan and film director Don Letts who did all of the sampling. They recorded four albums. Most of their success was in England and in dance clubs. BAD was a mix of the punk sound of the Clash mixed with hip hop. They split up after the 1989 album Megatop Phoenix and it was also after Jones nearly died from pneumonia. Jones formed a new band and called it Big Audio Dynamite II. Other members were Nick Hawkins on guitar, Gary Stonadge on bass and Chris Kavanagh on drums. The first album by this band was Kool Aid in 1990. But it's the 1991 album The Globe that was their biggest success. The single Rush topped the British charts and it was a top 40 US hit. The album was certified Gold. There are several samples in Rush but the most obvious is the keyboards from The Who's Baba O'Reilly. This turned out to be BAD's biggest hit and you can get all their hits on this budget comp. BAD II split up in 1995 and Jones left Epic. He released one more album as BAD and then ended it in 1997. Jones formed Carbon/Silicon in 2002 and they are still a unit. He is also involved with Damon Albarn's Gorillaz. BAD reformed to tour in 2011 but they did not record new music. Jones still produces and has formed short term bands but nothing permanent from what I could tell. Here's the video for Rush by Big Audio Dynamite.
