Song:Comin' Through The Apple
Album:The Best Of Joe Pass
Guitarist Joe Pass is best known for his 70s recordings on Pablo Records and his time with Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald. But you don't want to overlook his early 60s recordings on Pacific Jazz Records. Fortunately Blue Note has released a CD of those recordings. Pass spent much of the 50s in prison addicted to heroin. After going through the Synanon rehab program and his release from jail, Pass signed with Pacific Jazz. His debut album Sounds Of Synanon was released in 1962. At the same time, Pass recorded with Pacific Jazz artists Richard "Groove" Holmes and Les McCann. Comin' Through The Apple is from Holmes' 1962 album Somethin' Special. It's a tribute to McCann. So McCann wrote all the songs and arrangements. Pass is on guitar. Ron Jefferson is on drums. He was in McCann's trio. The sax player is credited as Joe Splink. That appears to be an alias for former Lionel Hampton and Bill Doggett sax player Clifford Scott. He also recorded for Pacific Jazz. I don't know why he used an alias. He only used it on a couple of albums. Unfortunately Somethin' Special is out of print and so is the Holmes Pacific Jazz comp. But you can get Comin' Through The Apple on this Blue Note Joe Pass comp of his Pacific Jazz recordings. Pass fans should check it out. Pass released a half dozen albums on Pacific Jazz. Then he went into session work until the 70s. Pass recorded another album with Holmes and McCann. it was recorded in 1962 and released in 1966 as Tell It Like It Is. He also appeared on the 1963 Les McCann album Soul Hits. Here's a video for Comin' Through The Apple by Joe Pass with Richard "Groove" Holmes and Les McCann.
