Song:Shape Of You
Album:Divide
Ed Sheeran may not look like a pop star but he certainly is one especially in his native England. Shape Of You was his first US number one hit. He was born Feb. 17, 1991 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England but he grew up in Framingham. He started out singing in church and learned to play guitar in school. As a teen, he was in a music development program and studied at the National Youth Theater. He began recording music in 2004. And he played gigs with Mike "Passenger" Rosenberg. Sheeran moved to London in 2008 and played local clubs. He continued to release EPs and post Youtube videos and that led to signing with Asylum Records in 2011. His debut CD Plus was a big hit in England with three top ten hits. Also , other artists started recording his songs. He toured the US opening for Taylor Swift. She recorded some of his songs. His 2014 album Multiply was even bigger. It sold 14 million copies worldwide. He didn't quite score a number one hit in the US. Thinking Out Loud reached #2. But he finally got that #1 hit with Shape Of You from the 2017 album Divide. Sheeran says it was the final song recorded for the album. He wrote Shape Of You for Rihanna but his label convinced him to keep it for himself. Sheeran wrote and produced the record with Steve McCutcheon AKA Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid. McDaid is a frequent songwriting partner. McCutcheon is a very busy producer. The song samples the TLC classic No Scrubs. So now Ed Sheeran is one of the most popular music stars in the world. Divide was the biggest selling album in the world in 2017. Who knows where he goes from here? He writes his own songs so even if things dry up he can write for other artists. Here's the video for Shape Of You by Ed Sheeran.
