AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Sidestepper

Artist:Sidestepper

Song:Linda Manigua

Album:More Grip

Sidestepper was an attempt by British producer Richard Blair to mix Colombian music with Electronic Dance Music. In 1992, Blair was working as a recording engineer for Peter Gabriel's Real World Records. He was working on an album by Colombian singer Toto la Momposina. He went to Colombia for a holiday and to learn more about her music. He stayed for three years and produced albums by Aterciopelados and Carlos Vives. Blair returned to England in 1996 and started DJing as Sidestepper. He released a 1997 album which was an instrumental mix of salsa and Electronic Dance Music. While working with Carlos Vives, Blair met Ivan Benevides of the duo Ivan y Lucia. On a 1997 visit to Colombia, Blair played his album for Benevides. Benevides suggested they could add vocals to Blair's music. They signed with Palm Pictures for the 2000 album More Grip. Palm Pictures was Chris Blackwell's new label after he sold Island to Universal. Sidesteppers released four albums for Palm. More Grip is available on CD. They released the 2016 album Supernatural Love on Real World. They toured at the time which is when this video was recorded. I don't think Sidesteppers is around anymore. But Latin music fans should check them out. Here's Sidestepper performing Linda Manigua at Seattle radio station KEXP July 18, 2017.
