Jazz drummer Mike Reed is a big part of the Chicago jazz scene. His music is Ornette Coleman influenced free jazz with post bop elements. He recorded several albums as leader of the band People Places & Things. He was born May 26, 1974 in Bielefeld, Germany and he grew up in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, IL. After majoring in English and psychology at the University of Dayton, Reed returned to Chicago and started playing in bands led by David Boykin, Rob Mazurek and Josh Berman. Reed and Berman started the Sunday Transmission music series at the Hungry Brain bar in Chicago and the Downtown Music free music series in Millennium Park. Reed is a founding director of the Pitchfork Music Festival and he is on the committee that programs the Chicago Jazz Festival. He is the founding director of the Constellation nightclub. And he bought and reopened the Hungry Brain last year. Reed first recorded as a leader in 2006. He has recorded mostly for the New York based jazz label 482 Music. His first band was called Loose Assembly and then he changed it to People Places and Things for the 2008 album Proliferation. Musicians are Greg Ward on alto sax, Tim Haldeman on tenor sax and Jason Roebke on bass. Wilbur's Tune was written by drummer Wilbur Campbell. He was a sideman with Ira Sullivan among others. Sullivan originally recorded Wilbur's Tune in 1958. Reed also recorded that song on the 2010 album Stories and Negotiations. The same band is on that album with the addition of Ira Sullivan on tenor sax and Jeb Bishop and Julian Priester on trombone. Both albums are available as digital downloads. Reed last recorded with People Places & Things in 2017. He currently leads the band The Separatist Party. They released an album in 2023 on the Finnish label We Jazz.
