Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW) have been one of the most popular jazz fusion bands since the 90s. They don't seem to be working together right now. But I'm sure they will get back together in the near future. The band is John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums and Chris Wood on bass. Drummer Bob Moses introduced them. He had worked with Medeski and Wood and taught Martin to play drums. I guess he thought Martin would be a good fit with them. That was over thirty years ago. MMW started playing the popular New York jazz club The Village Gate. They started out as an acoustic trio. Then Medeski started adding electronics no doubt influenced by 60s organists like Jimmy McGriff. Medeski's setup includes Hammond organ, Mellotron, Clavinet and other stuff. MMW signed a record deal with Gramavision. Chubb Sub is from the 1995 album Friday Afternoon in the Universe. Not surprisingly, MMW write and produce everything themselves. This comp covers the Gramavision years. MMW signed with Blue Note in 1998 and that's probably when they were at their most successful. They have recorded several albums with guitarist John Scofield. In recent years, MMW have recorded for their own label. Lately they have been working on individual projects. Medeski is working on the music for the Showtime TV series The Curse. Martin released an album recently under the alter ego Illy B. Eats. Wood is working with his brother Oliver as the roots music group The Wood Brothers. They released an album in 2023. MMW will reunite for a cruise in Feb. 2026. Then it would not be surprising to see them record and tour. Here's Medeski Martin & Wood performing Chubb Sub at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy.
