Celtic music fans should check out this all female Celtic music band Cherish the Ladies. They are also American. That might seem unusual but there are plenty of Irish musicians living in the US. The leader of Cherish the Ladies is Joanie Madden. She plays the tin whistle. The rest of the band membership is fluid. Joanie was born in The Bronx, NY to Irish immigrants. Her father Joe Madden was an All Ireland Champion on the accordion. As a child, she took lessons on the fiddle and piano. But she decided on the tin whistle and she took lessons from neighbor and National Heritage Award Winner Jack Coen. As a teen, she played in her father's band and won the 1983 All Ireland Championship. Then in 1985, Irish born musician Mick Moloney produced an album by a group called Irish Women Musicians in America. He approached Joanie about being in the group but she preferred the name Cherish the Ladies. It was originally supposed to be a concert series. But they signed with the Irish label Green Linnett and released several albums. Musicians like Eileen Ivers, Winnifred Horan and Cathie Ryan were in Cherish the Ladies at first. But Joanie is the only original member. The Boat to Bofin is from the 2011 album Country Crossroads released on Joanie's own label Big Mammy Records. Musicians are Mirella Murray on accordion, Grainne Murphy on fiddle, Mary Coogan on guitar and mandolin and Kathleen Boyle on piano. Guest vocalists include Vince Gill and Nanci Griffith. Cherish the Ladies released their latest album in 2018. But they still tour. Celtic music fans should check them out. Here's Cherish the Ladies performing The Boat to Bofin/The View Across the Valley/Martin Ainsboro's at the Tron Theater bar in Glasgow Scotland on BBC Alba. The dancer at the end of the video is four time World Champion Irish Dancer Declan McHale.
