Until his 2017 death, Bishop Eddie Long was the leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb Country, Georgia. When he started there in 1987, they had 300 members and grew to 25,000. Though there was controversy surrounding Long, I'm going to talk about how most of these megachurches have choirs and big record contracts. That's what this 2006 album is. It is the New Birth church choir with Long's name on the cover. T.D. Jakes does the same thing at his church. So how much input did Long have in the music on the record? Nothing because he's not a musician. When he signed with EMI Gospel in 2004, the idea was to use Long's name and picture to sell the record. He hired Kevin Bond to produce the music. Bond has been producing gospel music and especially choir albums for as long as I can remember. He's worked with a who's who of gospel music since the 80s. He started out with The Hawkins Family and worked with most everyone since then anonymously. For him, the choir is the star and he's always worked that way. New Beginning is available as a budget CD. A new pastor has taken over since Long's death so they aren't making choir records anymore. But there are still choirs making albums like this and I can assure you Kevin Bond is still a go to guy for megachurch choirs. Here's Newbirth Total Praise Choir performing God Is.
