AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Scott Amendola Band

Artist:Scott Amendola Band

Song:Smarty Pants

Album:Believe

Drummer Scott Amendola is mainly a sideman but he has recorded a few albums as a leader including this 2005 album Believe. He was born Feb. 6, 1969 in Tenafly, NJ. He started playing drums at age nine. At first he was interested in rock. But then his guitarist grandfather Tony Gottuso introduced him to jazz. The album that got him into avant garde jazz was the 1986 album Song X by Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny especially when he saw them live. So Amendola attended Berklee where he was classmates with Kurt Rosenwinkel. After graduating in 1992, Amendola moved to San Francisco where he met guitarist Charlie Hunter and was in his bands T.J. Kirk and then the Charlie Hunter Quartet. Amendola made his recording debut as a leader in 1999. He recorded three albums for Cryptogramophone Records. He was also a member of The Nels Cline Singers. By the time the 2005 album Believe was released, the band had expanded and there was crossover from Cline's band including Cline himself along with Jeff Parker on guitar. Other musicians were Jenny Scheinman on violin and John Shiflett on bass. Amendola still records occasionally as a leader on his own label. But he has recorded as a duet with organist Wil Blades and he is in several Bay area bands. Here's Scott Amendola with Jeff Parker and John Shifflett performing Smarty Pants at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, CA Oct. 28, 2010.
