Jazz pianist Ryan Cohan made his debut as a leader in 1996. Before that he had success as a sideman, composer and arranger. He was born June 6, 1971 in Chicago. Cohan's mother was a music teacher. The first thing she did was teach him to read sheet music. Cohan took violin lessons and switched to piano in high school. He earned a Bachelor in Music in jazz performance at DePaul University and he attended Skidmore College in Sarasota Springs, NY. Cohan worked as a sideman with Ramsey Lewis, Freddie Hubbard, Milt Hinton and Jon Faddis. Cohan signed with Motema Music in 2007. Joshua is from his 2010 album Another Look. Though Cohan wrote most of the songs on the album, Joshua was written by vibraphonist Victor Feldman for the Miles Davis album Seven Steps to Heaven. Musicians on this album are Joe Locke on vibraphone, Geof Bradfield on sax and clarinet, Lorin Cohen on bass, Kobie Watkins on drums and Steve Kroon on percussion. Cohan recorded three albums for Motema. His 2020 album Originations is on Origins Records. Bradfield also records for Origins. They continue to work a lot together.
