String Sisters is a Celtic music supergroup featuring six of the best female fiddlers in the world. They had success with the 2007 album Live. The big problem is getting them all in the same room to record. A second album was released in 2017. This has been a problem since the idea for the group was presented to Scottish fiddler Catriona MacDonald at the 1998 Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow. Catriona had been in a similar group called Blazin' Fiddles. Among those who were in the group when String Sisters performed in 2000 were Norwegian Annbjorg Lien, Liz Knowles from Cherish the Ladies, Irish fiddler Liz Carroll, Swedish violinist Emma Hardelin from the rock group Garmama and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh from the Irish group Atlan. Canadian fiddler Natalie MacMaster was supposed to be in the group. She was a victim of logistics. They didn't even call themselves String Sisters until 2005. They finally recorded the album and DVD Live in Norway for the Norwegian label Grappa. It was on Compass in the US. Shetland Fiddle Diva was written by Liz Knowles so she's taking the lead. They perform traditional songs but Annbjorg Lien wrote several songs. The backup band is David Milligan on piano, Tore Bruvoll on guitar, Conrad Molleson on bass and James Mackintosh on drums. The album is available on CD but the DVD is out of print. Though String Sisters continued to perform live occasionally, they didn't release a second album until 2018 called Between Wind and Water on their own label. It's hard to keep listeners interested when a band is recording that infrequently. They need to do something about that because they sound pretty good. Here's String Sisters performing Shetland Fiddle Diva/Kinyon's Jig/Kinyon's Reel/Lad O'Beirne's from the 2007 DVD Live.
