Artist:Mark Knopfler
Song:What It Is
Album:Private Investigations:The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler
Mark Knopfler is best known as the leader of Dire Straits. When they split up for good in 1995, Knopfler went on to a solo career. Mostly he is successful as an album and touring artist. A hit single would be nice but he doesn't need one. He was born Aug. 12, 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland. His main influence is Chet Atkins. And of course Knopfler got to record an album with Atkins. Dire Straits was very successful. When they went on hiatus after the 1985 album Brothers in Arms, Knopfler scored a few films like Local Hero, Cal and Comfort & Joy. Dire Straits weren't as successful when they reformed in 1988. Knopfler has recorded solo since they split up in 1995. He recorded for Warner Bros. from 1996-2009. As I said, his albums sell and his tours do well. What It Is from the 2000 album Sailing to Philadelphia is probably the closest he has had to a hit single as it did well in Europe. It sounds like a Dire Straits song. You can get it on this 2CD budget comp. One CD is Dire Straits songs and the other is Knopfler songs. Knopler left Warners for Verve for the 2012 album Privateering. It's a 2CD set and I guess Warners wasn't thrilled about it and let him go. After two albums for Verve, the 2018 album Down the Road Wherever was released on Blue Note. Verve and Blue Note are owned by Universal but have different management. Don Was is the president of Blue Note. There have been recent rumors that Knopfler is working on a new album. Here's the video for What It Is by Mark Knopfler.
