AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Pulp

Artist:Pulp

Song:Common People

Album:Hits

Pulp was around for almost 20 years when they finally scored a hit single in England. They were never able to chart in the US though I think music fans have seen the video for Common People on MTV. Pulp are from Sheffield, England. Jarvis Cocker was 15 years old when he started what became Pulp with 14 year old Peter Dalton. Cocker wanted to name the band after the Michael Caine film Pulp. But they thought it was too short so they were called Arabicus and then Arabicus Pulp. They started playing gigs in 1980. For most of the 80s, Pulp wasn't getting anywhere. Russell Senior replaced Dalton in 1983. Legendary BBC DJ John Peel tried to help them several times to no avail. Much of the problem was that Cocker was unsure of his musical direction. He's swapping out band members and trying to find a popular sound. A lot of bands would have thrown in the towel. But Cocker kept going until the 1992 single O.U. was named single of the week by Melody Maker. This got Pulp a deal with Island Records. They finally charted with the 1994 album His 'n' Hers. And their 1995 album Different Class did even better. The single Common People reached #2 on the British Singles chart. To a great extent, Pulp were riding the coattails of bands like Oasis and Blur. Despite Cocker's bad behavior at the 1996 BRIT Awards, Pulp continued to be successful in England until they split up in 2002. Cocker released a solo album in 2006. He reformed Pulp in 2011 mostly to tour. They split up for good in 2013. This comp covers their Island recordings. Here's the video for Common People by Pulp.
