Artist:Madonna
Song:Who's That Girl
Album:Celebration
Who's That Girl topped the charts in 1987. It is the title song from the 1987 film Who's That Girl which starred Madonna. Is this another discography orphan? Not exactly but Warner Bros. messed it up in a different way. After Madonna and husband Sean Penn laid a big fat egg with the 1986 film Shanghai Surprise, she didn't know if Warner Bros. was going to let her do another movie. She wanted to do a comedy titled Slammer about a girl who was jailed for a crime she did not commit. When she brought her director friend James Foley on board to direct, Warners agreed to do it. Griffin Dunne was Madonna's co-star. Warners wanted to make sure there was a soundtrack album this time. And Madonna even agreed to tour to support the film and the album. The problem was the movie was slammed by critics and it flopped at the box office. It grossed $7M. Madonna contributed four songs to the movie. Who's That Girl topped the charts. Madonna wrote and produced the song with frequent collaborator Patrick Leonard. The problem was the soundtrack album only had the four songs by Madonna. And the rest of the album was filler by other artists. Fans howled about having to pay full price for what could have been released as an EP. So the album did not do as well as Madonna's usual albums. The tour did fine of course. But in the end Who's That Girl was a failure as a movie and a soundtrack album. You can get Who's That Girl on this 2CD comp. Here's the video for Who's That Girl by Madonna.
It's funny, I remember Madonna being so hot and a big thing back in the 80's. MTV promoted her nonstop. And I had no interest in her or her music at all. Never was a fan of hers. It's interesting to me how quickly her fame passed. She was like a shooting star that lit up the night then burned out quickly and disappeared. I wish her the best. David.
