Artist:S. Carey
Song:Mothers
Album:All We Grow
Sean Carey is usually the drummer for the very popular group Bon Iver. After Bon Iver leader Justin Vernon encouraged Carey to perform on stage, Carey decided to record and tour as a solo artist when Bon Iver was on a break. He has recorded three albums and two EPs for Jagjaguwar. Carey is from Lake Geneva, WI. His mother is a music teacher. Carey learned to play the drums. He graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in percussion. That school has a very strong jazz tradition. It's 2007 and Carey heard that Vernon was turning Bon Iver into a band. He learned all the drum parts of Bon Iver's songs. The band he was in at the time opened for Vernon's first show. Carey met Vernon backstage and was hired immediately. He played drums on Bon Iver's set that night. When Bon Iver wasn't touring, Carey experimented making music in his bedroom. Vernon allowed Carey to perform a couple of songs on stage. And that turned into a record deal with Jagjaguwar. He calls himself S. Carey. Mothers is from his 2010 debut album All We Grow. For the most part, Carey writes, produces and plays all the instruments. He brought in jazz bassist Jeremy Boettcher and Nick Ball to play the guitar solos. Boettcher is a U of Wisconsin student. Carey toured to support the album. He opened for The Tallest Man on Earth. Carey continues to play drums in Bon Iver. His latest album as S. Carey was released in 2018. Here's S. Carey performing Mothers and the instrumental Action at Love Power Church in Minneapolis for the MPLS.TV series City of Music Dec. 2010.
