Jazz guitarist Marc Ribot can play any kind of music. But these days he seems to be concentrating on free jazz as he does on this 2014 album Live at the Village Vanguard. He was born May 21, 1954 in Newark, NJ. He played guitar in rock bands as a teen. Ribot studied with Haitian classical guitarist Frantz Casseus. Ribot moved to New York in 1978. He started out as a sideman and session musician, most notably with Tom Waits. He also recorded with Elvis Costello and John Zorn's Jewish Jazz movement. Ribot first recorded as a leader in 1990 with the album Rootless Cosmopolitans on Island Records. He has recorded for John Zorn's Tzadik label, Atlantic, DIW, Pi and currently Northern Spy. The album was recorded June 30, 2012 with Henry Grimes on bass and Chad Taylor on drums. Grimes was a free jazz legend going back to his recordings for ESP-Disk in the 60s. He died Apr. 2021. Taylor is a former member of the Chicago Underground Duo. Fans of free jazz should check it out. Ribot records all kinds of music. His latest CD Songs of Resistance 1942-2018 looks to be an album of protest songs featuring guest vocalists Tom Waits and Steve Earle. It is on Anti Records.
