AccuRadio Song Of The Day-NewSong

Artist:NewSong
Song:The Christmas Shoes
Album:The Christmas Shoes

The Christmas Shoes is one of the most successful original holiday hits in recent years. It topped the Adult Contemporary chart in 2000. It was written and recorded by the CCM group NewSong. This is the only time they have crossed over to the mainstream. NewSong was formed in 1981 at the Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, GA. The original members were Eddie Carswell, Billy Goodwin, Eddie Middleton and Bobby Apon. Carswell is the lead singer and main songwriter. In 1984 they signed with the Word Records label Canaan. They moved to Dayspring in 1991 and then moved to Benson in 1993. Middleton and Apon left and they were replaced by Leonard Ahlstrom, Charles Billingsley, Scotty Wilbanks and Russ Lee. NewSong had a lot of success in the CCM market in the 90s. Billingsley left in 1997 and Wilbanks and Lee left in 2000. The Christmas Shoes was a bonus track on the 2000 album Sheltering Sky. Carswell and Ahlstrom wrote it with St. Louis DJ Isaiah "DC" Daniel. He made sure the record got airplay and it topped the Adult Contemporary chart. Then Benson closed and NewSong signed with Zomba's Reunion label. The album The Christmas Shoes was released in 2001. The album is mostly Christmas standards and it is available as a budget CD. The Christmas Shoes was turned into a 2002 CBS made for TV movie starring Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams which did very well in the ratings. It spawned two sequels. The Christmas Shoes has been successful enough that is was named The Worst Christmas Song Ever by Jezebel.com in 2011. There's no question the song is an unabashed weeper. NewSong is currently on tour and they should have a new album out soon. They currently record for Integrity Records. Here's the video for The Christmas Shoes by NewSong.
