Umphrey's McGee is a jam band in the tradition of The Grateful Dead or Phish. Musically they are probably closer to Frank Zappa though they are capable of performing any kind of music. They are a very successful concert draw. Umphrey's McGee was formed in 1997 at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. It was a merger of two bands. The lead singer and guitarist is Brendan Bayliss along with Joel Cummins on keyboards, Ryan Stasik on bass and Mike Mirro on drums. The band is named after Bayliss' cousin. They released an album in 1998 and added percussionist Andy Farag. His father became their manager. Then they released a live album and guitarist Jake Cinninger joined in 2000. Cinninger brought a lot of songs from his previous band Ali Baba's Tahini. Cinninger and Cummins released solo albums followed by a new Umphrey's McGee album Local Band Does OK in 2002. This is when they started playing big music festivals like Bonnaroo. Mirro left in 2002 to attend medical school. He was replaced by Kris Myers. They continued to record and tour. They finally got national distribution for their CDs. Rolling Stone hailed Umphrey's McGee as "the next Phish" in 2004. For the 2011 album Death By Stereo, Umphrey's McGee finally signed with a major label, Dave Matthews' ATO label. That album was designed as an intro for new fans. Then they went back and started their own label Nothing Too Fancy. The 2014 CD Similar Skin was the first album on the new label. Mike Mirro died in 2014. Umphrey's McGee continue to tour and record regularly. Their latest CD It's You was released May 2018. Their music is a mix of several styles including progressive rock and jazz. El Diablo is as close to a pop song as you will hear from them. Here's Umphrey's McGee performing El Diablo in the recording studio.
