If Wishes Came True topped the charts in 1990. It was the biggest hit for Freestyle girl group Sweet Sensation. They were similar to Expose but they didn't last as long. They were formed in 1985 in The Bronx, NY as Sweet Temptation. Motown threatened to sue so the group name was changed to Sweet Sensation. Betty Lebron was the lead singer backed up by Margie and Mari Fernandez. From what I could tell, Betty did all the singing. The other two just danced. Betty met with producer David Sanchez at a recording studio. The rap group The Boogie Boys were recording that day. Boogie Boys member Joe "Romeo JD" Malloy heard Betty sing and decided to work with her. He wrote and produced a demo and he brought it to producer and DJ Ted Currier. Though Betty was a solo act, they decided to leave it as a group. Sweet Sensation released a couple of singles on Next Plateau. They did well enough that Atco Records signed them for the 1987 album Take It While It's Hot. Most of the album was written and produced by Malloy. It did OK. The single Never Let You Go topped the dance charts. Mari Fernandez was replaced by Sheila Vega. For the 1990 album Love Child, Currier brought in Steve Peck to produce. Peck was mainly a remix guy but he worked with Tony Terry and Terry was brought in to help with the vocal arrangements. The first single was a cover of The Supremes' Love Child. It reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then If Wishes Came True topped the charts. The song was written by Russ DeSalvo, Deena Charles and Robert Steele. DeSalvo plays the guitar solo. Love Child is available on CD but expensive. You can get If Wishes Were True on this Razor & Tie various artists CD. Beware as some various artists comps have an edited version of the song. This CD has the complete version. There was a remix album released in 1991. And then Margie and Sheila left. Betty brought in three new girls and she still leads a version of Sweet Sensation today.
