AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Erykah Badu

Artist:Erykah Badu
Song:Bag Lady (Cheeba Sac Radio Edit)
Album:Best Of Erykah Badu

Bag Lady was the first of two top ten pop hits for R&B singer songwriter Erykah Badu. Her success was mostly with her first two albums released in 1997 and 2000. She was probably better known for her eccentric look than her music. She was born Erica Wright Feb. 26, 1971 in Dallas. She started performing as a child. As a teen, changed her name to Erykah Badu because it sounded African. After studying theater at Grambling State, she decided to concentrate on music full time in 1993. A demo got the attention of Motown Records head Kedar Massenburg. He also managed D'Angelo. And after they recorded a duet, Erykah signed with Motown. Her debut CD Baduizm was released in 1997. The single On & On topped the R&B charts and reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified 3XPlatinum. On & On also won a Grammy. After releasing a live album and taking some time off to have a child, Erykah released the album Mama's Gun in 2000. Bag Lady was the first single. It topped the R&B charts and reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Erykah wrote and produced the song with Dr. Dre. The samples include a song from the soundtrack of the 1971 film Shaft jazz organist Johnny Hammond's 1974 recording Gambler's Life. The album was certified Platinum. I don't think it did as well internationally. Erykah's other top ten hit was Love Of My Life from the 2003 album Worldwide Underground. You can get all her hits on this comp which is available as a digital download. Since then Erykah hasn't been all that successful. Her last album was released in 2010 though she did release a mixtape in 2015. In 2013, she went to Africa to record but nothing has been released. She's been in the news lately for supporting R. Kelly in the wake of sexual assault charges. She is also in the new film What Men Want. So Erykah is still around and still on Motown. But her days of chart success are long gone. Here's the video for Bag Lady by Erykah Badu.
