Meiko Satomura heading to the Mae Young Classic

Tokyo Sports reported today that Joshi puroresu legend and Sendai Girls owner Meiko Satomura will be part of the second edition of the WWE's women's tournament the Mae Young Classic (MYC). Unlike Io Shirai who is coming to the WWE permanently, this looks like a one time appearance. Meiko is now 38 years old. She has been a pro wrestler for over 20 years. Some fans may recall seeing her in WCW in the 90s. She was still a teen at the time. And of course Meiko starred in the 2000 documentary Gaea Girls which you should check out if you haven't seen it. After Gaea closed in 2005, Meiko opened Sendai Girls. The original plan was to run shows only in the Sendai region. But the company nearly closed after the Mar. 2011 earthquake devastated the region. She moved Sendai Girls to Tokyo and it still operates today. At one time Meiko was thought to be one of the best wrestlers in the world. She's still pretty good but due to chronic back problems she can't do a lot of things that she could do when she was young. She was also out of action for over a year after a 2008 Azumi Hyuga knee broke her face. She needed extensive reconstructive surgery. After confirming the news with overseas sources, Tokyo Sports spoke to Meiko. She says she is in talks to appear in the MYC but nothing is decided yet. She did say that announcements would be made when the WWE appears in Japan on June 29 and 30. That's exactly how the WWE announced the Kairi Sane signing last year. As I said, this will be a one time appearance for Meiko. She even told Tokyo Sports she has no plans to leave Japan. But it certainly looks like Meiko will be appearing in the Mae Young Classic.
