AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Johnny Lee

Artist:Johnny Lee f/Lane Brody
Song:The Yellow Rose
Album:'Til The Bars Burn Down

After several years in Mickey Gilley's band, Johnny Lee had a total of five number one country hits. Lookin' For Love was his biggest hit. It was also a top five pop hit. This pseudo cover of The Yellow Rose Of Texas was a number one country hit in 1984. But it doesn't appear on any of Lee's comp CDs. So I guess it's an orphan. It's a duet with Lane Brody who was an up and comer at the time but this turned out to be her only big hit. She was born Lynne Voorlas Sept. 24, 1955 in Oak Park, IL but she grew up in Racine, WI. She started out singing jingles and she co-wrote the 1982 Anne Murray hit The Hottest Night Of The Year. She sang Over You in the 1983 film Tender Mercies which was a top twenty country hit and an Oscar nominee. She was under contract to GRT Records and had released a couple of singles but no albums. The Yellow Rose was the theme for the 1984 NBC series The Yellow Rose starring Cybill Shepherd. It's based on the traditional song The Yellow Rose Of Texas with Lee and Brody writing new lyrics. That's why I call it a pseudo cover. It was a number one country hit. It was on Lee's 1984 album 'Til The Bars Burn Down. That album is available on mp3. It has never been released on CD. Lane Brody finally released the 1985 album Lane Brody on EMI but The Yellow Rose did not appear on it. She did re-record it for her 2002 album Pieces Of Life. She's still around. She was just never a star. She even recorded another duet with Lee in 1986 that went nowhere. The Yellow Rose was one of Lee's last hits before fading in the late 80s. He still tours and he released an album in 2016. Here's the video for The Yellow Rose by Johnny Lee featuring Brody Lane.
