Rosalia de Souza is a singer who mixes bossa nova with jazz. But her career took an odd turn when she crossed paths with Italian producer Nicola Conte and Maria Moita became a hit in clubs. She was born July 4, 1966 in Nilopolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She moved to Italy in 1989 to study music. She sang with groups like Quintetto X and Intensive Jazz Sextet. And then she signed with Schema Records. And that's how she met Conte who was known for his remix work. They decided to record together and released the 2002 album Garota Moderna. It's a mix of Rosalia's bossa nova style and Conte's dance beats. Her cover of Carlos Lyra's Maria Moita was a hit in clubs and the album got a US release. Conte has remixed and reconstructed the recording several times. Rosalia has recorded four albums but not with the success of her debut album. Most recently she has worked with the Austrian production duo Pilots On Dope who released the 2014 CD Udopeia on Verve. Here's the video for Maria Moita by Rosalia de Souza.
