AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Green Day

Artist:Green Day
Song:When I Come Around
Album:Greatest Hits: God's Favorite Band

Green Day is one of the most durable bands from the 90s. They were a huge success with their 1994 album Dookie. After a dry period, they had renewed success with the 2004 album American Idiot. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt went to high school together in East Bay, CA. They formed the band Sweet Children with drummer John Kiffmeyer. Lookout Records owner Larry Livermore saw them and signed them in 1988. He suggested a name change to avoid confusion because there was a local band called Sweet Baby. They chose Green Day because they liked weed. They released a couple of EPs and then an album. Kiffmeyer left to attend college and he was replaced by Frank "Tre Cool" Wright. The 1991 album Kerplunk did well enough that major labels came calling. Green Day signed with Reprise Records and the 1994 album Dookie was produced by Rob Cavallo. The band liked his work with the indie band The Muffs. The album was a huge success. It sold twenty million copies worldwide. It was helped considerably when MTV put the videos for Longview, Basket Case and When I Come Around in heavy rotation. When I Come Around was the biggest chart hit as it reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The three albums that followed didn't do nearly as well as Dookie probably because Cavallo and Green Day tried to do different types of music. But that's not usually what fans want. They want a repeat of Dookie. Green Day started recording a new album in 2003. When the masters were stolen, they decided to start over. This was after they considered disbanding because they weren't getting along. American Idiot was a huge success. It sold 14 million copies and Boulevard Of Broken Dreams became their biggest hit. And the album was turned into a Broadway show. Green Day continues to tour and record. This budget comp is a good intro to their music. And they were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Here's the video for When I Come Around by Green Day.
