Fans familiar with the current Broadway revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying may want to check out the original 1961 version which made Robert Morse a star. He also starred in the 1967 film version. You may recognize Morse from his role in the AMC series Mad Men. But he is primarily known for Broadway musicals. He was born May 18, 1931 in Newton, MA. After serving in the US Navy during the Korean war, Morse moved to New York and starred in the 1955 Broadway production of The Matchmaker and the 1958 film. After starring in Say, Darling and Take Me Along, Morse won a Tony for his performance in the 1961 Broadway musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. The play was based on Shepherd Mead's 1952 bestselling book. Willie Gilbert and Jack Weinstock turned it into a play. But producer Cy Feuer thought it could be turned into a musical and brought in Guys and Dolls composers Abe Burrows and Frank Loesser. Loesser didn't want to do it but Burrows talked him into it. Burrows also directed. Stars included Robert Morse, Charles Nelson Reilly and Rudy Vallee. Though uncredited, Bob Fosse did the choreography. The show was a big success and ran for several years. It won seven Tonys including one for Morse. Morse and Vallee also starred in the 1967 film version. Though the soundtrack is available on CD, it's too expensive and the Broadway cast recording is available from Sony Masterworks as a budget CD. Robert Morse has had a long career in film and TV. But he has been most successful on stage in the 1972 play Sugar and as Truman Capote in the 1989 play Tru for which he won another Tony. He currently plays Bertram Cooper on the AMC TV series Mad Men. How To Succeed In Business has been revived on Broadway several times. Matthew Broderick won a Tony for his performance in the 1995 show. The most recent revival first starred Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame and currently stars pop singer Nick Jonas. John Larroquette won a Tony for his supporting role. That production closes next week. Here's Robert Morse performing I Believe In You from the 1967 film How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.
