Artist:Matt Costa
Song:Mt. Pitiful
Album:Unfamiliar Faces
No, it's not an Otis Redding cover. Singer songwriter Matt Costa is frequently compared with the much more famous Jack Johnson which is funny because Costa has toured with Johnson and is signed to his record label. He was born June 16, 1982 in Huntington Beach, CA. He played in bands as a teen but really wanted to be a professional skateboarder. But when he suffered a serious leg injury in 2000, he started taking his music seriously again. No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont heard one of his demos and produced a couple of EPs that Costa released independently. When he got the opening slot on Jack Johnson's tour, this led to Costa signing with Johnson's Brushfire Records which is distributed by Universal. Costa also worked on Johnson's soundtrack for the film Curious George. Mr. Pitiful was the first single from Costa's second CD Unfamiliar Faces. Like a lot of Costa's songs, the subject is unrequited love with a sense of humour. Mt' Pitiful appeared on the soundtrack of the 2009 film I Love You, Man. That CD was produced by Dumont but Costa's new CD Mobile Chateau was his first self produced CD. It was released a couple of weeks ago. It remains to be seen if Matt Costa can break out to a larger audience but Johnson likes him so it appears that he has a lot of time to grow. Here's the video for Mr. Pitiful by Matt Costa.
