The anthemic Women's Love Rights was the only top 40 pop hit for brassy soul singer Laura Lee. She had several R & B hits in the 70s mostly on Holland-Dozier-Holland's Hot Wax label. She was born Laura Lee Newton Mar. 9, 1945 in Chicago and moved to Detroit with her mom. She was adopted by former Soul Stirrers member Rev. E. Allan Rundless. He had a gospel group called The Meditation Singers featuring lead singer Della Reese. They recorded for Specialty Records in the 50s. Laura replaced Della as lead singer in 1956. In the 60s, Laura sang in Detroit clubs and first recorded as Laura Lee for Tic-Tac Records in 1966. She signed with Chess in 1967 and after she recorded a session in Chicago, they sent her to Muscle Shoals to record at Rick Hall's FAME Studios. Dirty Man was her first R & B hit. She had a couple more hits at Chess, recorded a couple of singles at Atlantic's Cotillion label and then signed with Hot Wax. Women's Love Rights reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of Laura's Hot Wax recordings were written and produced by Hot Wax house producers Angelo Bond & William Weatherspoon. They also worked with Freda Payne. She left Hot Wax for Ariola in 1975 but became ill with cancer and retired from music. She recovered and returned with an Al Green produced gospel album in 1983. Laura Lee is still an ordained minister today and records gospel very occasionally. This 2CD comp from the British label Edsel has all her Hot Wax hits.
