Artist:The Blues Project
Song:No Time Like The Right Time
Album:Anthology
The Blues Project was an early attempt to mix rock, blues, folk and other musical styles in a mainstream rock band. No Time Like The Right Time was their only chart single. They were short lived due to internal bickering. They came out of the mid-60s Greenwich Village folk scene led by guitarist Danny Kalb who was already playing on sessions but wanted to start his own group. In 1965, he got together with guitarist Steve Katz of The Even Dozen Jug Band, bassist Andy Kulberg, drummer Roy Blumenfeld and singer Tommy Flanders. An audition for Columbia Records failed but Columbia session keyboard player Al Kooper liked them and joined the band. They signed with Verve Forecast and Flanders left while they were recording their debut Live At The Cafe A Go Go. The album didn't do well but their second album Projections started to gain steam and No Time Like The Right Time was getting airplay when the band started having problems. Al Kooper wanted to add a horn section and Kalb didn't want that. Kooper and Steve Katz left to start Blood, Sweat & Tears. The problem was that Kooper wrote and sang most of The Blues Project songs. Kalb soon left and Kulberg and Blumenfeld attempted to continue but eventually Kulberg left to join Seatrain. The Blues Project split up for good in 1973. This 2CD comp is recommended. Of course Al Kooper has had a long career mostly as a producer but Danny Kalb was inactive for many years before returning in the 90s. The Blues Project has reunited occasionally. They had the potential to be much bigger than they were. Here's a video for No Time Like The Right Time by The Blues Project.
