The original announcement a few months ago was that Strikeforce was planning a 135lb women's championship tournament. They secretly decided to run this tournament at Freestyle Cage Fighting in Tulsa for reasons that I have already written about. It's a bunch of baloney. Obviously they have figured that out themselves because they have now decided to run a different tournament. It will no longer be a championship tournament. Instead the winner of this tournament will earn a Strikeforce contract. So no contracted fighters like Sarah Kaufman and Meisha Tate will be in it. Obviously it's for less experienced fighters. Of course it's a bit of a sham because Strikeforce can still (and probably will) offer contracts to any fighter they choose making the tournament somewhat of a pointless timewaster. You know what it reminds me of. When the WWE was doing Tough Enough a few years ago, the winner was supposed to earn a job with the WWE. But several Tough Enough participants were routinely offered contracts. Same with the Diva Search. So it's still a lie but not the same lie. And it's still a broken promise. They should still be broadcast on Showtime under the Strikeforce banner. Farming out is farming out no matter how you slice it. And with this tournament scheduled to begin in January, when will they fess up?
Isn't this also what happens with the UFC and The Ultimate Fighter, or am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteSort of. I guess the difference is UFC has never had any pretense about what The Ultimate Fighter was supposed to be. And it's still on Spike and not farmed out to some regional company. The problem with this is it's all based on convenience and lies. Coker likes tournaments. But sometimes it makes no sense to do them. They need to fess up. And if they put this concept on Showtime, I would be OK with it though I still think it's pointless.
