Album:The Best Of The Housemartins
The 80s British group The Housemartins had become very popular in England and were all set to cross the pond when they split up in 1988 and became The Beautiful South. The Housemartins were formed in 1983 by singer Paul Heaton (born May 9, 1962 in Bromborough, England) and guitarist Stan Cullimore (born Apr. 6, 1962 in Cambridge, England). They recorded a demo that got them a contract with Andy MacDonald's Go! Discs label. The rest of the group went through some changes but the members that recorded were Norman Cook on bass and Dave Hemingway on drums. The Housemartins had a distinctly British sound. Happy Hour was their third single but their first hit on the British charts. It came with a music video that had claymation in it so that got them attention on MTV. Their debut album London 0 Hull 4 went top ten in England and their 1986 cover of Caravan Of Love was their only number one hit in England. So they released a second album and they seemed to be on their way to becoming one of England's most popular bands. And there were plans to launch in the US. But they split up in 1988. Heaton said at the time that they only planned to stay together for three years. But Heaton and Cook were butting heads over the musical direction of the group. Heaton and Hemingway went on to form the very successful group The Beautiful South. Cook went on to be known as Fatboy Slim. Cullimore writes children's books and TV shows. Mercury released this comp in 2004 with a bonus DVD. Here's the video for Happy Hour by The Housemartins.
